CHALKHILL - PROGRAMME OUTLINE
A contemporary tri-weekly soap opera about backwater Britain, CHALKHILL will bring a strong mix of humour, social commentary and drama to the soap genre.
Based in Portsmouth - a traditional south coast UK seaport around which a diverse polyglot community is developing - the programme will focus on different families living within the deprived fictional community of CHALKHILL. The show will reflect the day-to-day lives of Britain's provincial communities, depicting a life far removed from the metropolitan districts of Albert Square and Weatherfield, or the rural riches of Emmerdale.
Throwing the spotlight on a world of ‘teenage terrorism', lack of aspiration, simmering racial tensions, and hidden violence and frustrations, CHALKHILL will provide a new perspective on what is parochial Britain, showing an often-humorous yet dangerous world operating ‘under the radar'. Although the show's base will be located within one particular community, the drama will reflect UK life, its stories having national relevance.
Celebrating life in the 21st century, CHALKHILL will provide a dramatic yet often fun and entertaining view of UK life in the face of the breakdown of community and the living of existential lives. In its narrative the show will explore the impact of technology, the impact of the media, and the social, political and economic factors that influence everyday life.
Although difficult issues will be explored, the overall vibe of the show will be satirical, upbeat, humorous, optimistic and inspirational. The show will reflect the randomness and irrelevance of real life that has so successfully been captured in the celebrated user generated content of sites such as You Tube.
In our depiction of difficult issues, we will strive to show positively how they can be overcome and lived with. The shows characters will become positive role models for the viewing audience.
CHALKHILL will feature likeable characters of all ages that viewers will welcome as friends. Moving away from the accelerated plotlines of the peak time terrestrial TV soaps, CHALKHILL will move at a realistic pace, embracing contemporary issues in greater detail and at a pace relevant to its provincial setting.
