 | ADAM CROMBIE Age 39, the brutish father of the Crombie household. Riddled with low self esteem, Adam is forever on the defensive and rules the household with a threat of violence. Pompey born and bred, he served in the army before being pensioned off. He feels de-masculated by an army injury which adds to his resentment and aggression. Married to Carol the spark died long ago in their relationship, both now leading separate lives. |

| CAROL CROMBIE Aged 39, a school brainbox who married the school tough guy, blew all opportunity that life seemed to offer her and has been paying the price ever since. Trapped in a loveless marriage, Carol devotes her life to the raising of her kids: Luke, Charlotte and Emma. Emotionally repressed, she lives an isolated life in Portsmouth having been disowned by her family. A romantic at heart, she lives in hope that one day things will get better yet feels this is but a dream. |

| CHARLOTTE CROMBIE Age 15, wise beyond her years, more of a confidant to her mother than a daughter, Charlotte often carries the burden of much of what is going on in the Crombie household. She excels at school yet lacks self worth and self confidence. She carries a dark secret from her childhood that is set to destroy the Crombie family. |

| LUKE CROMBIE Age 15, twin brother of Charlotte, Luke is a once good boy gone off the rails. Distant from his family, Luke has fallen in with the Squibb gang which terrorises the CHALKHILL estate. Deeply unhappy, insecure and angry, Luke carries a great deal of bottled up pain which he projects through violence and aggression. |

| EMMA CROMBIE Age 8, the life and soul of the Crombie household, full of innocence, vitality and energy, Emma is a mega brain who finds everything in life comes easy to her. Confident, motivated with a cheerful and optimistic personality, Emma is liked by all; she is spoilt by her father. |

| KAREN LOCKWOOD Aged 40, a single parent who works in Portsmouth as a self employed Physiotherapist, Karen is Carol's only real friend in CHALKHILL. Middle class, she is well educated and wealthy yet has a deep sadness about her. Mother to four year old ‘Baby Luke'. |

| ROSIE GROVES Age 44, Pompey born and bred, is reeling from the shock departure of her husband, Doug, who left her six months ago for another woman. Feeling unattractive, unloved and useless, she has become a virtual recluse in her own home. Mother to Paul, Mercedes and Russ, Rosie is an affectionate and no nonsense character who tries to do the best for all, often putting her own happiness last. |

| PAUL GROVES Age 19, has put off going to University to support his suddenly single mother and family. Educated and attractive, Paul is keen to prove himself in the world yet can't help thinking everything is against him. Guilty of taking himself too seriously, Paul is a positive character yet is incredibly naive. He works at local burger bar ‘ChavMacs' which he hates with a passion. |

| MERCEDES GROVES Age 15, media obsessed whose aspirations are to be on Big Brother and become the next Jordan, she has taken the opportunity of her parents' separation to go completely off the rails. Lacking self discipline and self respect, Mercedes is a ticking time bomb waiting to explode. Underneath her brashness and bravado is a little girl who feels desperately unloved and insecure. |

| RUSS GROVES Age 12, a computer geek, Russ is the most well adjusted member of the Groves household. Naturally intelligent and driven; life comes easy to Russ with little effort and he is well liked by all. Into whatever the latest fad is, Russ is quite metrosexual and is willing to experiment with his appearance and clothing. Quick witted, he is constantly in conflict with his brother and sister who are always trying to put him down. |

| JACKIE SQUIBB Age 42, mother of the CHALKHILL estate family from hell, Jackie's kids all have different partners. Never having worked in her life, Jackie is uneducated, undisciplined and constantly on the defensive. From a family of long term unemployed, her mindset is that life owes her something and she is always on the take. Deaf in one ear, she is always screaming and reflects the less respectful side of CHALKHILL life. A big ‘Eastenders' fan, Jackie thinks the characters aggressive behaviour reflects real life so she has copied them. |

| GARY SQUIBB Aged 16, Gary is known throughout CHALKHILL as the leader of a teenage gang that constantly terrorises the estate. Rude, undisciplined, uneducated and left to grow up on his own while his mother was preoccupied raising herself and her disabled daughter Lorraine, Gary has been left to run wild all his life and now the consequences are beginning to hit home. Full of resentment and a deep anger, Gary's behaviour is fuelled by a deep sense of inadequacy and isolation. |

| LORRAINE SQUIBB Age 18, down syndrome, Lorraine is the most calm and level headed influence in the Squibb household. Lorraine and Jackie share a deep bond, with Lorraine often providing her mother much needed advice and wisdom. Intelligent and perceptive, Lorraine offers her family unconditional love and affection in a household filled with deep resentment and emotional need. |

| MELVIN WEST Age 40, Melvin is the current layabout boyfriend of Jackie to whom she is engaged. Unemployed with no drive or aspiration, Melvin just sits around the house doing little more than watch TV, eat, and bitch about the unfairness of the world. He could put it right. |

| VICTORIA HARRIS Age 24, Vicki is CHALKHILL's answer to ‘Posh Spice'. An aspiring ‘It' girl who sees herself as socially superior to all, she works as a recruitment consultant in Portsmouth commuting from Southampton where she lives. Covered in orange self tan, appearances mean everything to the spiritually devoid Vicki. Deeply self obsessed and materialistic, she is currently dating Stewart who she sees as her ‘bit of rough'. |

| STEWART WRAY Age 24, extremely amiable and good hearted, Stewart works as a Youth Worker at the CHALKHILL Youth Centre. A genuinely nice guy who is drifting through life with no real aim or direction, he enjoys his work but lives for the weekend when he likes to party. He has been dating Vicki Harris for 6 months now; she has boosted his self confidence around girls but he is struggling to cope with her controlling ways. |

| GREG PETERSON Age 52, manager of the CHALKHILL Youth Centre, Greg is obsessed with new age spirituality and is keen to impart this knowledge onto his staff and the younger generation to help make the world a better place. He is known by Stewart as ‘Yoda'. On the surface a somewhat bumbling and comic character, Greg's relaxed attitude hides a tragic past and a great deal of inner pain. |

| LEONARD SIMPKIN Age 78, Leonard is CHALKHILL's nosey neighbour. Obsessed with society's falling standards, he keeps a beady eye on all young people and is quick to involve the law in any wrong doing. At heart a lonely and isolated man, Leonard's activity hides a person deeply unhappy living out his days by himself. |
